Orange County Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Opossum Extermination Tips
Opossums have sharp teeth, and they feed on berries, grapes, fruits, and nuts in your garden. They can fight with your pets (dog, cats) and make them injured. Opossum carries many diseases like leptospirosis, tuberculosis, fever, and Chagas disease. You must take steps to deal with opossums. Here are a few lethal ways to deal with opossums.
Shooting the opossums
For the persons living in a rural area, killing opossums by shooting seems a good idea. But this method does not work well and cannot be considered an effective way to deal with opossums. Opossums don’t appear in the day; you have to wait for night to shoot opossums. After shooting, you have to clean the area and get rid of the body. If you are going to shoot opossums in urban areas to avoid any problem, make sure that in your state shooting opossums is legal. Otherwise, you may face trouble.
Using poison to kill opossums
Poison can work best to kill the opossums, but the trouble is that there is no registered poison available in the market that is registered for killing the opossums. Most of the time, people use rat poison to deal with opossums. It works, but it carries many other dangers like it can kill your pets and other animals, and there is another chance that poison will not work against opossum. Before using poison against opossums, you should make sure that it will not affect any other animal.
Lethal traps
Using lethal traps is another option that can be considered, but the problem with lethal traps is that opossums are in big size, and other animals like cats or dogs can get in danger due to these traps. After killing an opossum through a lethal trap, it would be difficult to dispose of carcasses of the opossum.
Alternative ways
Using lethal ways to kill the opossums can be expensive, risky and not too much effective therefore you can use alternative ways to get rid of opossums; some natural ways are discussed here
